>> Drought Tolerance and Regeneration of Different Turf Grass Mixtures for Middle Europe |
|
|
For some years now, drought periods during summer months are increasing in Middle
Europe. Furthermore, daily maximum temperatures and yearly average temperatures are also rising
(DWD 2009). This increases the need for water on turf, which is usually achieved by irrigation.
Since drinking water and irrigation water often have the same source and providing drinking water
has higher priority, irrigation water maybe in short supply during summer. Reductions of water for
irrigation of turf is highly desirable if not necessary. The use of warm season grasses in Middle
Europe is limited due to low winter temperatures. However some combinations of Poa pratensis L.
and different species of Festuca could reduce the need for irrigation (Gandert und Bure¨ 1991).
In this paper, turf grass mixtures with Festuca sp. and Poa pratensis are evaluated in a pot
trial for their drought tolerance and their ability to regenerate after reinstated irrigation. Digital
image analysis is used to measure relative amounts of green and yellow in images of turf grasses.
