Effect of Prohexadione-Calcium used as a Growth Regulator on Growing Height, Root Growth and General Aspect of Turf Grass
Growth regulators are organic compounds which are produced naturally or synthetically.
They have been used in agriculture for a long time to avoid fast growth of cereals and therefore
negative impact on stalk stability. Their timely applications shorten and thicken the stalks and get
them more stabilized (Franke, 2007).
Growth regulators also find use in turf grass maintenance, on professional sports turf
growth regulators are used to reduce mowing frequency and consequential costs. Growth
regulators are also described as improving root growth, plant’s general aspect, sward density and
lead to an intensive green colouration (Lord, 2009).
Most growth regulators interfere with the production and transmission of plant growth
substances, which are produced by the plant itself, and inhibit the biosynthesis of gibbereline.
Prohexadione-Ca, commercially known as “Regalis”, is a growth regulator active at the end of the
gibbereline biosynthesis and is well tolerated by the plant (Sengbusch, 2003).
