>> Effects of Aeration on Soil Physical Properties in Different Turfgrass Soils |
|
|
The continuous effects of play and maintenance on rootzone layers causes soil compaction and affects soil physical properties. Thus compaction is one of the main reasons for causing adverse effects on the soil pore structure over time creating unfavourable growing conditions for turfgrasses. To alleviate these problems, professional turf managers apply different aeration methods to different depths traditionally in spring and autumn to improve soil physical properties for the growing conditions. However the effects are generally of short duration (Murphy and Rieke, 1994; Baker et al., 1999; Gibbs et al., 2001; Guertal et al., 2003; Morhard and Kleisinger, 2004). At the University of Bonn, an experiment was designed to characterize the change of soil physical properties in different root zones after a) aeration with high pressure water injection (Hydroject/Hj, 325 jets/m²) and b) deep solid tine cultivation (Terra Spike/Ts, 280 tines/m2, Depth:15cm). Measurements of soil physical parameters were performed before and after treatment, and additionally penetration resistance was recorded after subsequent compaction
