>> Evaluation of Agrostis and Festuca Varieties for Use on Scandinavian Golf Greens |
|
|
It is recognized that varieties of Agrostis and Festuca for use on Scandinavian golf greens must be adapted both to the prevailing climate and to the extreme cutting, compaction and wear stress imposed on these areas. However, none of the Scandinavian countries used to have a programme for variety testing on golf greens. Many greenkeepers had strong opinions about which varieties to use, but their preferences were seldom based on comparative studies under similar climatic conditions to the Scandinavian one. The use of unadapted plant material may result in winterkill caused by frost, ice encasement, anaerobic conditions, fungal diseases or a complex of these causes.
The first Scandinavian variety testing project under realistic green conditions was carried out from 2003 to 2006. The objectives of the project were:
- to clarify which varieties of Agrostis and Festuca are best suited for golf greens in two contrasting climates in Scandinavia.
- to create meeting places for discussions among breeders, seed companies and greenkeepers in order to encourage cultivar awareness and continued efforts into turfgrass breeding for northern environments.
The complete results and the final report from the whole experimental period are presented in Aamlid et al., 2005 and Aamlid et al., 2006.
