>> Performance of Several Cynodon dactylon and Zoysia japonica Cultivars in Southern Italy |
In Italy, most species used for turf areas are cool-season grasses, which are not always suitable for the climatic conditions of Southern Italy, where low water availability, drought and heat stress, occurred frequently during summer months. In these environmental conditions, the use of warm-season grasses is to be preferred thanks to their higher resistance to high temperatures and water stress.
So far, few researches have been conducted in Italy (Volterrani et al., 1996; Croce et al., 2001; Pardini et al., 2002; Marchione V., 2004) about this topic. Among warm-season grasses, two of the most commonly used species for their resistance to water stress and for their large use in sport and ornamental turfgrasses, are Cynodon dactylon and Zoysia japonica. These species are currently available in a wide range of seed-propagated and vegetative cultivars.
This considered, a research was carried out in an Apulian environment of Southern Italy with the aim of testing environmental suitability and aesthetical visual qualities of different seed-propagated bermudagrass and zoysiagrass cultivars of foreign origin.
